Before You Adopt
Adopting a pet is a big (and beautiful) commitment. This page is here to help you decide if now is the right time — and what to expect once you bring a new companion home.
Deciding to Adopt
Think about the day‑to‑day realities — cost, time, and how your home will change. Setting expectations up front makes adoption smoother for you and safer for everyone.
Cost
In addition to adoption fees, there are ongoing costs associated with pet ownership, such as:
- Local pet licensing (where required)
- Supplies: carrier, litter box, scratching posts, toys, bowls
- Food and treats (sometimes prescription diets)
- Routine and emergency veterinary care
- Training and socialization support
- Boarding/pet sitting when you travel
- Grooming and hygiene supplies
- Unexpected home damage (it happens!)
Consider:
- Are there pet deposits/pet rent requirements where you live?
- Are you expecting major lifestyle changes in the next 6–24 months?
- Can you set aside funds for surprise expenses or consider pet insurance?
Lifestyle, home & time
Companion animals can be wonderfully independent, but they still need routine care and enrichment. Consider:
- Is your home set up to be safe for a curious animal?
- Do you need landlord/property manager permission — and are there restrictions?
- Does anyone in the household have pet allergies?
- Do you have time daily for feeding, cleanup, play, and bonding?
- Do you travel often, and have a plan for reliable care while you’re away?
- Is everyone in the home ready to share responsibilities (including kids)?
A good match is about more than love.
We’ll help you find a companion whose energy level and needs fit your household.
Perks of Adoption
Real personalities
Shelter and foster notes help you understand quirks, routines, and comfort needs.
Support from counselors
You’re not alone — we help with introductions, settling in, and behavior questions.
Care-forward matching
We prioritize safety and stability over speed, so adoptions stick.
You save a life
Adoption creates room for another rescue — and strengthens a humane community.
Don’t support cruelty
Avoid irresponsible breeding and “mill” operations. Adoption supports animals already here — and encourages transparent, humane care practices.
Build a more humane world
When you adopt, you help normalize rescue-first choices, fund medical care, and make room for the next animal who needs safety.
